FTTC (Fibre To The Cabinet) is a good option for small schools and is widely available. As the new Gigabit network is rolled out across the country, FTTP (Fibre To The Premises) will become more widely available and will supersede FTTC (Fibre to the cabinet).

The good news is that if you have an existing FTTC connection you can upgrade to FTTP with no cancellation costs for the FTTC.

What is FTTC?

FTTC combines fibre optic cable to the street cabinet and copper cable from the cabinet to your site.  FTTC is a widely available asymmetrical service offering a maximum of 80Mbps downstream and 20Mbps upstream.  Delivered bandwidths are dependent on the quality plus distance of the copper cable from the cabinet to your site.

What is FTTC used for?

FTTC is ideal for smaller schools Internet access and applications that don’t require a large upstream bandwidth. FTTC is also ideal as a cost-effective resilient circuit for fibre connected sites.  FTTC supports teaching and learning applications as well as school management and services such as telephony or CCTV.

Understanding the rewards and risks of using new technology

Having developed longstanding relationships with many schools in the East Midlands as well as many other areas in the UK, we help schools safeguard their pupils from a host of issues, such as bullying/cyber bullying, sexual exploitation, violence, grooming and emotional abuse.

To help schools better understand emerging threats and the technology required to minimise risks, we run safe online workshops with guest speakers from many trusted partners, such Leicestershire police, ARK ICT and Netsweeper. We also regularly work with external agencies such as the National Cyber Security Centre, UK Safer Internet Centre and National Education Network to formulate best practices aligned with industry leaders on safety.

Is there any hardware required?

As part of the fully managed service we will provide you with an industry standard Cisco router, which enables an optimum FTTC connection, which our suppliers can monitor and manage remotely. This is sent directly to your school and fully installed by one of our engineers.

Main Advantages of FTTC

All emPSN provided FTTC services are connected directly to the emPSN network and data centres, behind our carrier grade managed firewalls and onward to the JISC provided National Education Network.  This enables us to provide you with the safe and secure environment needed for schools’ modern online services to support teaching and learning.  This enables you to take the savings from not having to invest in, or manage, local equipment for web filtering or firewalls.

FTTC is a cost effective service offering meeting the needs of smaller schools and organisations.  The service is fully monitored and managed 24hours a day, enabling us to meet the high availability demands of education.
