The latest news regarding the ransomware attack on over 200, 000 organisations worldwide, most notably the NHS, and its impact on front line services have been well documented over the last few days. Of course, those responsible for IT resources and cyber security within organisations will be thinking about how exposed they may be to an attack like this.
It is quite common for a school to receive an inconspicuous email along the lines of “Daughter absent – sick note attached”, but what if that attachment is compromised and takes that computer out? Not a problem if it’s just one computer – but if it’s a computer with a network drive with all school files? Suddenly, your problem escalates.
What can you do?
The National Crime Agency advise the following to reduce the risk of these attacks:
- Making sure your security software patches are up-to-date.
- Making sure that you are running anti-virus software.
- Backing-up your data in multiple locations, including offline.
- Avoiding opening unknown email attachments or clicking on links in spam emails.
